Butte County Door-to-Door Alarm Scams

June 8, 2010

Butte County Sheriff warns of unlicensed door-to-door solicitors; residents urged to report cases to local authorities.

Prompted by complaints received about two weeks ago concerning door-to-door security alarm sales, Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith has issued a statement reminding residents to ask for identification and a county-issued license from solicitors… There is a detailed application process that must be completed in order to lawfully sell door-to-door.

If the person is eligible, a laminated permit bearing the applicant’s picture is issued and is good for one year. As cited by the ER, most cities in Butte County also require a separate permit for door-to-door solicitations.

While there is a county issued permit for door-to-door solicitation, which covers a background check, all alarm company employees and operators must go through a DOJ (Department of Justice) background check and have a live scan of their fingerprints.

As a whole, the alarm industry takes this offense very seriously. There are strict policies in place to protect against unlawful door-to-door alarm salespeople. For example, employees and operators are required to carry a license issued by the Bureau and Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).

All security and alarm employees shall posses an Alarm Company Employee (ACE) license and all owner/operators shall posses an Alarm Company Qualified employer license (ACQ). All mandates are dictated from the Department of Consumer Affairs.

To protect yourself from bothersome and potentially costly scams, we urge you to ask any door-to-door salesperson to kindly show you their license. If they are unable to produce a valid license, feel free to take down their information and contact the Butte Country Sheriff at 530-538-7321 or email at infosheriff@buttecounty.net or your local city or county law enforcement departments.

We are happy to say that most of Butte County’s alarm companies are made of good people and to our knowledge; there are no door-to-door sales practices. The issue at hand involves alarm companies from, believe it or not, other cities and even other states.

To be honest, this problem has been around for some time and over the years we have heard some real nasty stories. In same cases a “salesperson” will seek out people with security systems and pretend to be a representative from that company. Once they have your attention they will badger you to “upgrade.” The upgrade is usually them moving your account to their company and charging you excessive fees.

Here are few things to keep in mind if any security alarm salesperson approaches your door.

Clearly Displayed Logos

1. Uniform

Are they wearing clothes with the  company’s logo? If not, this might be your first clue. Bottom line, ask for an ACE or ACQ license.  If they can’t produce one get a card from them and then ask them to leave, then contact law enforcement.

2. General Equipment Lingo

Often times these scam artist will say they are from a recognizable company like GE or Honeywell. These general statements often gain your trust. Even though these are very reputable companies, they make the hardware, they are not an alarm company.

3. Employee Identification

Again, do they have an ACE or ACQ license on them? If not, no deal.

If any salesperson meets just one of these red flags, we urge you to contact your existing alarm system provider. If you are a Certified Systems customer, please contact us if you encounter such a questionable person. Also, you can look up companies and employees on the BSIS website and even file a complaint. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents who are contacted by unlicensed door-to-door solicitors to call their local law enforcement agency.
